This will be our
59th summer. Putney leaders and instructors are fun, energetic,
creative, safety-conscious, and knowledgeable. They enjoy working
with teenagers, and are attracted to the opportunity to go beyond
the superficial level and to get to know each participant as a
mentor and a friend.
General Leadership Requirements
Our leaders are recent graduates of prestigious colleges, graduate
students, and educators – who will ensure that our programs are
safe, fun and rewarding.
Putney Student Travel leaders and Excel staff members must be able
to motivate and energize students in a wide range of situations and
settings. Due to the high degree of independence and responsibility
granted, excellent personal leadership skills and the ability to
handle multiple ongoing tasks are crucial. The programs require
extensive close-up interaction with students; the ability to
inspire, lead, mentor, counsel, and set limits are all very
important.

What programs are you hiring for?
Every year we have many veteran leaders and staff members who return
to work for us again. If you apply for a specific position that we
have already matched with a veteran leader or staff member, we will
work together to find another position for you that matches your
skills.
Can I
apply for more than one position?
Yes, you can apply for more than one position. We may also consider
you for positions you haven’t applied for, given your specific
skills. When applying to be a leader or instructor for one of our
programs, you are considered for all positions for which you are
qualified.
Even if you are applying for more than one position, you need only
send one copy of your resume and cover letters. If we invite you to
interview with us, we will discuss all leadership possibilities
during that time.
It is helpful to us if you indicate in your cover letter the
specific positions for which you feel MOST qualified and in which
you are MOST interested. Please don’t just say you’d like to lead a
Community Service program, rather specify that you feel qualified to
lead a Community Service program in Vietnam or in Tanzania. You can
use your cover letter to elaborate on the skills you have that would
make you a good candidate for each specific position.

When should I apply?
We begin accepting resumes in December and interview the majority of
our candidates from January through March. We travel throughout the
U.S. at this time and we will invite you to do an in-person
interview with us if your skills match our needs.
If you are interested in working as a leader or instructor on one of
our programs this summer we encourage you to submit your resume and
cover letter as soon as possible. Once you’ve contacted us we’ll be
in touch regarding the next steps.
Our goal is to finish our hiring decisions by the end of March.
There are sometimes individual positions left to fill at that time,
so please feel free to continue to apply through mid-March.(back

How
do I apply?
1 – Learn about who we are by reading on our website about the
programs you are interested in leading. It is also helpful to read
the bios of leaders from past summers by clicking here.
2 – Make sure that you read carefully the eligibility requirements
for the programs in which you are interested.
3 – Send us your resume and cover letter. Email is the easiest way
for us to receive your application. Please include an updated resume
and a cover letter highlighting the applicable experience that makes
you a great candidate. Email to
jobs@goputney.com.
4 – If your skills fit our needs, we will be in touch for an
interview. Our interviews typically last 30-45 minutes. The
interview is a time for us to learn about you and for you to learn
about us, so please come prepared with any questions you might have.
